All-inclusive resorts promise the dream: one price, everything included, zero stress. And when you book the right one, that's exactly what you get. But not all "all-inclusive" experiences are created equal. Here are five things I wish every traveler knew before booking.

1. "All-Inclusive" Doesn't Always Mean ALL Inclusive

Some resorts include everything — top-shelf drinks, specialty restaurants, water sports, spa credits. Others include the basics and charge extra for the good stuff. Always ask (or better yet, let me check for you) exactly what's included before you book.

2. Adults-Only vs. Family Resorts Are Very Different Experiences

If you're an empty nester looking for peace and quiet, make sure you're booking an adults-only property or at least an adults-only section. There's nothing wrong with family resorts, but the vibe is completely different. Sandals, Secrets, and Excellence are great adults-only options.

3. Location Within the Resort Matters

Many all-inclusive resorts are large — really large. Where your room is located can make or break the experience. I always request rooms close to the beach or main pool for my clients, away from entertainment areas if you're a light sleeper.

4. The Best Deals Aren't Always on the Resort's Website

As a travel advisor, I have access to rates, upgrades, and perks that aren't available to the general public. Room upgrades, resort credits, spa treatments, and early check-in are all things I can often negotiate on your behalf.

5. Timing Is Everything

Shoulder season (April-May and November) often offers the best combination of good weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds. Peak season (December-March) has perfect weather but higher prices and full resorts.
